George grasped the man by the collar. His knuckles were white. “What did they do to my brother?”

“They shot him in the head. He is dead, sir.” Zacharias said the words swiftly. George released his grip and set the man down lightly. The tiny Frenchman had been lifted off the ground.

Nuala grasped a chair as the room swirled around her. Her heart pounded like the slow ringing of a funeral bell. The world had stopped moving around her. Elise eased her into the chair as Pep rushed for water. George stood staring at Zacharias, frozen in place. His face was a ghastly white. “How did anyone know where Will was?”

Zacharias took a deep breath and swallowed. “Auguste was seen with the Nazis earlier, in one of the bars. Someone said they saw one of the bastards pass him a purse.”

Nuala met George’s gaze. She’d been right. Someone had been in the wood earlier. Auguste hadn’t only been tending the old horse. George said hoarsely to the Rouxs, “Take care of Nuala. I’m going somewhere.” He turned to Zacharias. “Where is Auguste now?”

“He’s returned to Maidou. He’s in that shanty of a farmhouse. I saw him earlier buying a big meal with that Monique at the local tavern.” It was Pep who answered.

“Buying it with the thirty pieces of silver he took for betraying my brother.” George spoke softly. His fists were clasped tightly at his side.

Nuala’s throat was dry in spite of the water Elise had forced her to drink. She forced herself to swallow another mouthful. She still couldn’t take it in. Will had been the best of them. The smartest, the most sophisticated, the one with the brightest future. His death was unfathomable, but she knew she owed him justice. “I’m coming with you.”
